BEING THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD
By W. G. Guy
The light that God has given to me, I am to give to others. The love that God has given to me, I am to give to others. The forgiveness that God has given to me, I am to give to others. This is being the light of the world that Jesus called us to be.
Matthew 5:14-15 – Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
Light is given so the people may see; light is not be hidden or held in secret. Who are the others that we are to be light unto? Anyone you come across that is in need! The apostles Peter and John gave us an example of being this light in the Book of Acts. They had no relationship with the poor lame beggar sitting at the gate of the temple. He was just another person who was in need.
Acts 3:1-8 – Now Peter and John went up together into the temple at the hour of prayer, being the ninth hour. And a certain man lame from his mother's womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms of them that entered into the temple; Who seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple asked an alms. And Peter, fastening his eyes upon him with John, said, Look on us. And he gave heed unto them, expecting to receive something of them. Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk. And he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up: and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength. And he leaping up stood, and walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God.
They gave this lame man what they had to give; it was what Jesus and the Holy Spirit gave to them: “such as I have give I thee. This is being “the light of the world”; giving to others what God has given to us through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. Just as God gave Jesus for us; and just as Jesus gave Himself for us and to us. Jesus gave Himself and all that He is on our behalf. This is also the promise of God.
Romans 8:32 – He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?
Let us walk in His light, being His light in this world of darkness.
1 John 1:7 – But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
Do you have His marvelous gift to give to others? In doing so, we will be the light of the world, that Jesus is to us, and that we are to be to others.
