INSTRUCT YOUR CHILDREN TO KNOW GOD AND HIS WORD
By W. G. Guy
Deuteronomy 6:7- 9 – and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: and thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.
Then Israel was warned that after they prospered, that they were not to neglect God in their lives.
Deuteronomy 6:12-15 – then beware lest thou forget the Lord, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage. Thou shalt fear the Lord thy God, and serve him, and shalt swear by his name. Ye shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the people which are round about you; (for the Lord thy God is a jealous God among you) lest the anger of the Lord thy God be kindled against thee, and destroy thee from off the face of the earth.
This warning was further emphasized as they entered the Promised Land and were instructed to have absolutely no dealings with the pagan idolatry that was prominent in the land.
Deuteronomy 7:2-6 – ….thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor shew mercy unto them: neither shalt thou make marriages with them; thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son, nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son. For they will turn away thy son from following me, that they may serve other gods: so will the anger of the Lord be kindled against you, and destroy thee suddenly.
Israel obeyed until after the death of their leader Joshua. The fathers of the next generation failed to obey God and teach their children as instructed. Thus Israel went into full rebellion against God by embracing the very things that He warned them not to do.
Judges 2:10-13 – ….. and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the Lord, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel. And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and served Baalim: and they forsook the Lord God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the people that were round about them, and bowed themselves unto them, and provoked the Lord to anger. And they forsook the Lord, and served Baal and Ashtaroth.
Defying God, and embracing that which is evil and corrupt of the world around them, made God angry. And, as any good father does who must administer corrective punishment to a wayward child, God had to chastise Israel.
Judges 2:14-15 – And the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers that spoiled them, and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies. Whithersoever they went out, the hand of the Lord was against them for evil, as the Lord had said, and as the Lord had sworn unto them: and they were greatly distressed.
Over hundreds of successive years, Israel did the same thing over and over again by worshipping idols and the false gods of Baal, Molech, Ashtaroth, and Ishtar: the gods of the people surrounding them. As such Israel lost their unique identity as God’s special people who were to show the world the blessings of living with and for God.
Deuteronomy 7:6 – For thou art an holy people unto the Lord thy God: the Lord thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth.
You, as a parent should want your children to grow up as being “special”, knowing and representing God in the way they live.
The lesson to be learned from this is that Christian parents, especially fathers, are tasked with educating their children in the knowledge of God and His Word. This is to keep them on the straight and narrow path that leads to godliness and righteousness, which has great and eternal reward.
Matthew 7:13-14 – Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
The New Testament also confirms this practice that parents should follow for the benefit of their children.
Hebrews 12:5-7 – And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: for whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?
The following is a notice that a child is said to have no real father if that father does not chasten (correct/punish) his child for errant behavior. If boundaries are not set for children, they will grow up to be lawless and defiant of authority due to having not learn to respect.
Hebrews 12:8-11 – But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons. Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.
This may be hard for modern parents to accept, but discipline with appropriate punishment is absolutely necessary in raising children. The following are a list of scriptures from a man recognized having great wisdom (Solomon), on raising children who are in need of correction.
Proverbs 13:24 – He that spareth the rod hateth his son; but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes (as often as needed).
(Note: the “rod” refers to a spanking stick like a wooden spoon or wooden ruler. Ever use your hand to spank a child because you hand is to convey a loving touch. The child should never fear your hand but should fear the “rod” of correction.)
Proverbs 22:15 – Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.
Proverbs 23:13-14 – Withhold not correction from the child; for if thou beastest (spank) him with the rod, he shall not die. Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.
Since each child has a unique personality, some need very little correction and are compliant; they only need a word or a stern look. Many children have a tendency to “push the limits” on any imposed boundaries. Still some children are defiant and chose to do their own thing: these need serious discipline in order to break their stubbornness. (There are times to apply the board of education to the seat of understanding.) Wisdom is needed by parents in how to handle each type. God freely gives this wisdom when we ask Him.
Proverbs 29:15 – The rod and reproof give wisdom; but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.
Therefore:
Proverbs 22:6 – Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
Too many children grow up to bring shame to their parents and family: this was clearly prophesied by the apostle Paul that would occur in the last days. Paul describes what people will be like that were not raise up in the nurture and admonition of the LORD.
2 Timothy 3:1-5 – This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
You don’t want your children to be among them. Our current society and educational system is so corrupt that the majority of people have become so attached to the things of this world that they have forsaken God as did ancient Israel. Therefore, instruct your children to know God and His Word. Their current and eternal future depends on it!
