THE CHURCH OF THE ITCHING EARS
By W. G. Guy
There is a significant difference between churches today and the original church as it began at Pentecost. In fact, there are multiple forms of churches today, and some of them reflect more of the world than they reflect Jesus Christ. One of these forms of church today was foretold by the apostle Paul. He described them as churches that will eventually forsake the original message.
2 Timothy 4:3-4 – For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
The people in such churches are more concerned about satisfying their “self” rather than to hear what God has purposed for them. There motive is, “Tell me what I want to hear”. They favor preaching that is “pleasing to the ear”, and “after their own lusts”. They don’t want to hear anything negative like preaching on sin, judgment, what is forbidden, etc. They prefer messages that make them feel good about themselves, and that build up their self-esteem. (You may see some of these churches on television.)
1 Timothy 4:1-2 – Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
These kinds of churches preach vain deceit, the doctrines of man that please the flesh, and the philosophy from the rudiments of the world.
Colossians 2:8 – Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
They like preaching that focuses on creation and the things of this world, rather than focusing on the Creator and His kingdom. This is known as the success and prosperity doctrine that has invaded the church in recent decades.
1 Timothy 6:5-6 – ….perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself. But godliness with contentment is great gain.
Such churches and messages direct people’s attention to the things of this world, and how to obtain them for self-fulfillment of the flesh.
1 John 2:15-16 – Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
They neglect bringing people’s attention to God, His kingdom and the love that He provided for us in Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit.
Colossians 3:1-2 – If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
Some churches attract a lot of people because of their pleasing messages. Some of these are called “mega churches”. Why are so many people attracted to these churches? Most likely it is because people like what they hear. The preaching sounds pleasing to them, and they hear what they want to hear; not what they need to hear. It makes them feel comfortable. People don’t like to feel uncomfortable, uneasy, or CONVICTED OF THEIR SINS.
John 16:7-9 – Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: of sin, because they believe not on me;
Thus such preachers refuse to preach anything that is negative. They fail to realize God’s divine properties of natural physics, as is evidenced in the flow of electricity. The power of the positive goes to fill the void of the negative. It you don’t reveal the negative, then the positive will not flow to it. The power that they reject is the power of the Holy Spirit: the power that brings conviction of sin, and reveals Jesus as providing for our total redemption.
Lacking the convicting power of the Word of God by the Holy Spirit, they rely more on entertainment and the “show” to attract and keep people in their fold. As a result, the people in these churches live more like the world than as children of God in Christ. The end result is that these so-called Christians behave as the apostle Paul foretold.
2 Timothy 3:1-5 – This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
Where do you find a form of godliness, and deny the power thereof? In these kind of churches! Note that Paul advised, “from such turn away”. These kind of churches deny the power that changes lives, forgives sins, heals the sick, casts out demons, fills people with the power of the Holy Spirit, and turns the world upside-down by revealing Jesus Christ in their lives. Thus we have the church of the itching ears!
There is no need for churches to preach on the material things of this vile world. The LORD God Almighty knows exactly what you need, even before you ask.
Matthew 6:31-33 – Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
God’s love is so great that His care for you has no limit.
Romans 8:31-32 – What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?
