THE MOST VALUABLE THING ON EARTH
By W. G. Guy
What is the most valuable thing on earth? The answer depends on who you ask because different people place values on different things. Most people will agree that things of value are such things that bring or indicate wealth such as gold, silver, diamonds and similar items. Still others will value other kinds of possessions. The common thing among most people is in what they possess, or seek to possess, that that they consider valuable, and that enhances their life. However, consider what Jesus said:
Luke 12:15 – And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.
The desire for wealth is like the bait that Satan uses to turn a person’s heart toward carnal and worldly things that corrupt the soul, misleading him into things that are not really lasting or important. Loving and seeking the things (riches) of this world are not of God, and are not lasting or permanent.
1 John 2:14-17 – I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one. Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
If we are God’s children we have access to things that are above and that are not of this world.
Colossians 3:1-2 – If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
Thus we have access the things that are eternal and of lasting value.
2 Corinthians 4:18 – While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.
God knows what things we have need of while we occupy in this world. If we seek Him for His divine provision, He has promised to provide all that we need in this life.
Matthew 6:31-33 – Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
Those who do not depend on God as their source rely on their own efforts, with their corrupt minds, to obtain what they consider to be valuable. Yet such things will all pass away.
1Timothy 6:5-6 – Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself. But godliness with contentment is great gain.
The pursuit of such riches can be deceitful, an obsession of desiring that which can destroy spiritually by strangling the Word in them.
Luke 8:14 – And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection.
1 Timothy 6:17 – Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;
Now for a change in perspective of what is truly of eternal value: suppose you ask God what He considers is the most valuable thing on earth and you will get an entirely different view of what He considers is true value. To God the most valuable thing on earth is mankind:. Why? Because man was made in His image and likeness of God, who He poured Himself into man when He formed him from the dust of the earth and breathed His life into him.
Genesis 2:7 – And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
Man is so special to God that He even made a special place for him to live blessed beyond measure.
Genesis 2:8 – And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.
After man lost God’s image and likeness due to sin, God sought to fully restore that image and likeness by giving of Himself in the person of Jesus, His only begotten Son to redeem mankind because of his great value to God, the Father..
John 3:16-17 – For God so loved the world (human society), that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world (human society) through him might be saved. (Redeemed and fully restored).
Jesus is the full revelation of God the Father to mankind; God in the flesh – Immanuel!
John 14:9 – Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Show us the Father?
God’s love for man is so great, and that He considers man so valuable, that He gave of Himself to redeem and restore us back into fellowship and relationship with Him. God’s care for us is so great that He promised to provide all our needs as we learn to depend on and trust Him.
Romans 8:31-32 – What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?
This also shows that the greatest thing that God has for us is His love that not only restores our relationship to Him but supplies all of our material and spiritual needs as we live out our lives on this earth. God gives us unfettered access to appeal to Him before His heavenly throne. He has an “open door policy” for us to use when needed.
Hebrews 4:16 – Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need. (Note: to come boldly means to come without hesitation or reservation.)
God’s loving care for us is outstanding as recorded in His Word.
1 Peter 5:7 – Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.
God even provided, through Jesus, that we can overcome not only the world and the flesh, but the evil works of the devil and his demons,
Luke 10:19-20 – Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.
In addition, God gives us a place where we can abide with Him, eternally; that’s how valuable we are to Him! God’s loving provision for man is not only physical but spiritual, covering all things that we could ever need in this life.
Philippians 4:19 – But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
So the question, What is the most valuable thing on earth? The one and only true answer is mankind is the most valuable thing on earth. Our personal relationship with Him is the greatest value that any of us on earth could seek and desire. And the greatest value to man is God’s LOVE! Think about that!
