HIS ENEMIES TO BE MADE HIS FOOTSTOOL
This is repeated seven times in scripture; twice in Hebrews - why? What is the significance of this statement in the Bible?
Psalm 110:1 – The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand,
until I make thine enemies thy footstool.
The context in which this statement is made in this passage is King David prophesying of the Messiah regarding warfare against his enemies and obtaining total victory and rule at the time of the judgment. It appears that it is our Heavenly Father who sets this in order. This refers to the Day of the Lord and the establishment of His eternal kingdom on earth.
Matthew 22:43-44 – He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool?
Here we see that the Pharisees were challenging Jesus with questions in order to trip His up, but He turned the tables on them with a challenging question of His own which they were unable to answer. Thus He showed the people that these “know-it-alls” were actually not that knowledgeable in spiritual things. Jesus was identifying Himself in a way and these “experts” could not discern what He was talking about.
Mark 12:36 – For David himself said by the Holy Ghost, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool.
Mark tells of the same matter as recorded in Matthew but in more general terms, but again silencing the religious leaders at that time.
Luke 20:42-43 – And David himself saith in the book of Psalms, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool.
Luke records the same event as Matthew and Mark in which Jesus goes on to warn the people listening to Him that they should beware of the religious elite who use their positions to take advantage of the people for selfish reasons.
Acts 2:34-35 – For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, until I make thy foes thy footstool.
The apostle Peter, in his preaching to the observers at the marvel of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, uses the same passage to testify that this is Jesus who King David spoke of and who is the resurrected Messiah and is now seated at the
right hand of the God the Father in heaven. Thus Peter echoes David prophecy which the people were familiar with.
Hebrews 1:13 – But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool?
In this passage we read of many prophetic scriptures testifying of Jesus the Messiah being the exalted Son of God. Thus the question is asked, Who did God the Father say was going to be seated on His right hand – none but God’s own Son. This is spoken after making reference to the ministry of angles who were mentioned in verse 4 by comparison.
Hebrews 10:12-13 – but this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God; from henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool.
Here we read that Jesus the Messiah has completed His assigned task and was now seated at the right hand of God the Father and awaiting till the Father initiates the culmination of this age at which time Jesus then is given His prophesied rule over all which will be totally under His dominion.
Note that seven times this statement is recorded in the Bible. The number seen represents perfection or completion. Therefore it appears that this statement is repeated these seven times to demonstrate the absolute assurance of what has been prophesied will be fulfilled – and we had better pay attention as it will affect every one of us. To be His footstool means to be conquered, cast down and totally defeated, never more to rise up again as He has total victory – you lost the fight for your eternal life.
Now consider what it means to be His enemy; what it means to be under His footstool. Those who do not have a relationship with Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord are still sinners and as such considered enemies.
Romans 5:8-10 – But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.
Philippians 3:18-19 – (For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.)
Colossians 1:21-23 – And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled in the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight: if ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel,
Do you personally know Jesus as the Son of God who gave His life as a payment of for the penalty of your sins and was raised from the dead and is now in His rightful place next the almighty God our Heavenly Father? Many people know about Jesus, and so they call themselves Christians or Christ’s followers. The problem is that knowing about Him IS NOT REALLY PERSOANNALY KNOWING HIM. True Christianity is not a religion or system of beliefs and religious practices. True Christianity is a RELATIONSHIP; a personal one that you have with Him and HE has with you. Think on that!
Do you have a relationship or simply a religion? It does make a big difference!
