WHY DID JESUS COME?
By W. G. Guy
The Bible clearly identifies why Jesus came into this world, and it was for a specific purpose. The evil one, referred to as the devil, called Satan, set himself to overturn what God has made along with opposing the order that God established in the earth. Satan’s work is to oppose God in every way he can; opposing God’s Word and the righteous way of life that He gave to mankind. In one simple word, the work of Satan is SIN.
1 John 3:8 – He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
God sent Jesus to destroy the works of the devil! Therefore we need to know and understand just what are the works of the devil. First of all we see that all his efforts are SIN, going against God’s will, God’s plans and purposes for mankind.
Satan’s efforts bring about his corruption and demonic influences to oppose God and to subvert mankind in order to bring attention to himself as the god of this world.
2 Corinthians 4:3-4 – But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: 4 in whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.
Not only does Satan try to keep mankind from the knowledge of God through Christ, but he also desires to be worshiped; even by Jesus.
Luke 3:5-7 – And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it. If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine.
In addition to outright sin and transgression of all that is of God, Satan also works other forms of evil on mankind in order to oppress us all.
John 10:10 – The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
The thief, referring to Satan, works to steal, kill and destroy. Jesus also says that Satan is the father of liars to those that are under his influence.
John 8:44 – Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
Now for a closer look at the works of Satan. First we are told he is a thief who comes to steal. One of the first things he tries to steal is our health and well- being, both physical as well as mental and emotional. He will attack our bodies and our minds.
Thus sickness and disease comes from the master of sin.
Luke 13:11, 16 – And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself. ….. And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?
The devil will try to rob all that he can that God has provided for you; this also includes your wealth as well as God’s provision for you, especially what God has promised in His Word.
Matthew 13:19 – When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart.
In addition to causing sickness and disease, Satan will also kill as many as he can because he is a murderer, just as Jesus said as stated above. So how does he murder? Consider people so emotionally or mentally oppressed that they commit suicide. Consider that suicide is murder committed by the victim; because they are driven to it by evil forces. This is an attack on the mental and emotional part of a persons life.
Another form of murder that Satan has been very successful with is abortion. With abortion Satan is killing those whose life begins in the womb who are to be protected by its mother. He does this in order to keep that new life, made in the image of God, from achieving anything, including fellowship with God. Then we have the willful criminal act of murder committed by those who are under the evil influence of the devil and his demons; this is sometimes called an acts of passion which implies a mental or emotional state.
When Jesus said that the devil was a murderer “from the beginning”, he was referring to the time recorded in Genesis when Cain killed his brother Able due to jealousy; a mental or emotional state.
Next we see that Satan tries to destroy whatever he can, especially that which is of God in the lives of believers.
1 Peter 5:8-9 – Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.
James 4:7 – Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Fortunately God has given us the power and authority in the name of Jesus Christ to resist the devil’s attempts and enables us to resist him.
Luke 10:19 – Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
Mark 16:17 – And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
Satan’s destructive efforts can be seen in many areas of people’s lives: their marriages; their finances; their testimonies; their accomplishments; their careers, and even their ministries. How does he accomplish such destruction? His primary tool is lies; remember Jesus said he was the father of liars. The devil is the great deceiver who tries to get people to believe and accept things that are not true. This includes not only false religions, but also false doctrines within the church.
Other tools the devil uses to destroy lives is all manner of addictions: drugs, alcohol, pornography; sexual immorality; and one of Satan’s favorites – homosexuality. Through homosexuality he perverts what God has made when He created male and female. Thus he destroys the family unit that God made and which composes the basic unit of the church.
The abundance of lies these days are a predominant indication that we are in the last days prior to the return of Jesus Christ. The devil’s children reject truth and embrace what is wrong and destructive.
2 Thessalonians 2:11-12 – And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: that they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
The lack of truth in people’s lives allows them to be deceived by Satan so that they continue to walk in the darkness of evil. Knowledge of the truth is the key to victory over Satan and his works. Jesus came to destroy the works of Satan, the liar, robber, killer and destroyer, and He does so by being the TRUTH of the WORD OF GOD. As Jesus prayed to the Father:
John 17:15-17 – I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
Since Jesus is the Word that was made flesh, He is also truth.
John 14:6 – Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
The words that Jesus spoke are also absolute truth.
John 8:31-32 – Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
In addition, Jesus and the Father have sent the Holy Spirit to us, and the Holy Spirit is also the Spirit of Truth.
John 16:12-13 – I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
Jesus Christ came to destroy the works of Satan and made provision for us who believe in Him and His Word to walk in victory over the enemies efforts to steal, kill and destroy. Please understand that you cannot be passive in this walk of faith because it is a battle, and we all must fight with what God has given us. Then the victory is ours in Christ.
One key to overcoming victory is forgiveness, not only of others, but of your own repented sins also.
2 Corinthians 2:11 – lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.
Finally:……
Ephesians 6:10-18 – Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;
Please note that each piece of the armor of God is an application of the Word of God put to use in your life. Now you know why Jesus came!
