THE TWO HIGHWAYS OF LIFE
By W. G. Guy
In this earthly life there are two highways, or path ways, that people travel on from their life’s beginning to their end. Some people are able to recognize when they are on the wrong highway and then choose to get off and onto the other highway. The two highways are mentioned by Jesus in the Bible in Matthew 7 as shown below.
If you take a step back from your daily hustle and bustle you can watch the rest of the world and see how they are traveling down their highway of life and where they are heading. Most people are seeking the things of this world to the satisfaction of their self, also referred to as their flesh, which is selfishness.
1 John 2:15-17 – Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
Unfortunately, the Broadway, which is the most traveled, goes in the wrong direction. The Narrow Way is less traveled, more difficult, and seems to go against the flow of the rest of the world.
Matthew 7:13-14 – Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
The Broadway is for heavy traffic so that it can carry the flow with ease. Most of the world’s population is going down this highway. But where does it lead to? The Narrow Way cannot handle heavy traffic as it is not an easy passage. It is restricted, not only as to its size, but it also has obstacles making it more difficult to navigate. But where does it lead to?
Jesus gave us the answer to both of the above questions as to of where do these highways lead to. The Broadway is the path of sin that leads to ultimate destruction. The Narrow Way is the path of truth and righteousness and leads to ultimate blessing and eternal life.
The Narrow Way goes against the current of this world’s system of sin and selfishness. Don’t follow the crowd and the sinners that walk after their own selfish lusts. The Narrow and right Way takes effort and discipline, self-denial (death to self), and endures struggles against the flesh, the world and the devil’s temptations.
Luke 9:23-25 – And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it. For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away? (Walking down the Broadway.)
Just because a person goes to church does not mean they are walking on the Narrow Way. Only walking with Jesus Christ will mean you are walking on the Narrow Way. This is revealed in the apostle Paul’s writing to Timothy where he describes those on the Broadway are the many who claim to have “a form of godliness, but deny the power thereof”.
2 Timothy 3:1-5 – This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
Where do you find a form of godliness but in a church; the behaviors listed in the above passage are of those who are walking on the Broadway that leads to ultimate destruction.
Which highway are you on; the broad easy one where most people are traveling? Or are you on the narrow more restricted road that few people travel on? Jesus declared that most people are on the wider easier roadway and will not experience the abundant eternal life that God has offered us through Jesus Christ.
The reason is because most people are not aware of the eternal life that is available to us who become children of God and are to be welcomed into His glory at the end of this physical life. All they are concerned with is the affairs of this mortal life and how to survive and be comfortable in the here and now. They have no concept of the eternal future. This is why it is incumbent on us who are on this narrow path to communicate (witness) to those on the wrong path so that they can choose to change direction, repent, and join us on the narrow road to life and godliness.
Maybe you should check your road map to make sure you are on the right road – the Narrow Way that leads to life. This is of special concern because, “few there be that find it”. Hope you are one of the few!
