WHAT DOES “LORD” MEAN
By W. G. Guy
This article is in reference to Jesus Christ as being Lord. To understand what the word lord means we should consider the use of the term most of us are familiar with. That term is landlord, which refers to the owner of the land or property that is inhabited by others who are not owners or related to the one who owns that land or property.
The landlord, as the owner, is actually the master or ruler of that land or property that belongs to him. Those that dwell on his property are subject to his dominion, rules or requirements that he exercises over that land or property. Consider how this applies to Jesus Christ as Lord:
Luke 2:11 – For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
Jesus was born with that title because this world and all that is in it actually belongs to Him and His Heavenly Father, and He came to redeem and restore it back to Himself.
Psalms 24:1 – The earth is the LORD'S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.
Yes, the earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof. This expression, the fullness thereof, means everything on the earth is
rightfully His and to be subject to Him. This includes all of they that dwell therein.
What many people fail to recognize is what is written in the Bible concerning the governing authority that God appointed to be the administrator over the earth. God gave that authority and dominion of the earth to mankind.
Genesis 1:26 – And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
Although God and His Son Jesus maintain ownership over the earth, He gave the management thereof to mankind.
Psalms 115:16 – The heaven, even the heavens, are the LORD'S: but the earth hath he given to the children of men.
A major problem occurred about six thousand years ago with God appointed management team. That problem was when the devil sought to gain control over the earth to rule and have dominion. Satan, also called the devil, used his subtly when he tempted Eve in the Garden to transgress what God had set up as a rule. At the point where both Adam and Eve partook of the forbidden tree they actually submitted to Satan, that is when and how he gained that ability to control and manipulate mankind into his evil works.
Satan even bragged about his conquest of the world to Jesus when he was trying to tempt Christ to obey his ploy. The devil wanted to have control over Jesus also, but he failed.
Luke 4:5-6 – And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.
Since that time in the garden, Satan has been acting like he is the god of this world as was identified by the apostle Paul when addressing those who have not accepted what Jesus provided.
2 Corinthians 4:4 – In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them that believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.
That ability to act as the god of this world was delivered to Satan back in the garden. However, Jesus defeated the devil on the cross and with His resurrection at which time He declared His total authority over the earth and all that is in it.
Matthew 28:18 – And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
Then Jesus passes that authority back to those who are His followers when He gave them a commission to spread this good news around the world. He gave us the use of His name which is all the power and authority needed to be His representatives on the earth and to counter the influence of Satan and his demons. Jesus even gave a sample of this authority to His disciples before His crucifixion because He is the rightful owner of the earth as Lord.
Luke 10:17 & 19 – And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name. Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
Jesus gives this power and authority over Satan and his demons to all who believe in the redeeming power of Jesus Christ and His name.
Mark 16:17 – And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
Unfortunately, too many Christians have not been taught that they, as God redeemed children, have this ability to deal with Satan and his forces. It is vitally important to recognize that Jesus Christ truly is LORD because the earth is His as it true owner, of not only the earth, but all that God made which includes the heavens.
Philippians 2:9-11 – Wherefore God also hath highly exalted Him, and given Him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is LORD.
In addition, He is coming back to earth to personally rule as the sovereign King along with His Saints, those who have believed on Him as Lord and Savior.
Jude 14 – And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints,
Do you know Jesus as both Savior and LORD? As Lord, it is He that should direct your life and affairs; He also provides all that you need, but only if you accept His lordship in your life.
