WHAT IS THE GREAT AWAKENING
By W. G. Guy
Recently God’s prophets have spoken that amidst the corruption and confusion that is present in our society there will come a great awakening. This is obviously referring to a spiritual awakening unto the truth of God’s Word and a revelation of Jesus Christ and knowledge of Him.
In 1984 I wrote a book entitled, AWAKENING THE SLUMBERING SAINTS published by Fairway Press. This book was based on my doctoral dissertation in research on what is required for a true revival. One man who read this book told me that it was years ahead of its time, indicating that it was for a period yet to come.
The theme of this book was based on Romans 13:11-13, a verse the Lord spoke to me three times in the middle of the night; the third time it woke me out of sleep. I grabbed my Bible and opened it up to Romans 13 to read what the Lord was speaking to me. Then I asked the Lord what it meant to me, and He answered, “REVIVAL OF THE CHRCH”. This revival requires REPENTANCE, a turning away from what has become normal practice by too many Christians in their churches and in their personal lifestyles.
Romans 13:11-13 – And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light. Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.
I often wondered why the Lord gave me Romans 13:11-13 and did not include verse 14 which seems to be the capstone statement for these verses. Later I found out that this was for me to personally learn by my efforts to press into Him and His Word.
Romans 13:14 – But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.
The above passages of scripture refer to darkness turning to light as in the arrival of the morning, the time when the light begins to shine.
Isaiah 60:1-3 – Arise, shine, for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee. For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the Lord shall arise upon thee, and His glory shall be seen upon thee. And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of the rising.
This light obviously is speaking of spiritual light which is illumination of the Spirit giving knowledge and revelation of God’s divine love and His provision for mankind in Jesus Christ. It also contrasts the darkness which represents evil, sin, corruption, wickedness and selfishness of the nature of man.
The emphasis is on love as indicated in the verses leading up to the cited passage. Darkness illustrates the sensual selfishness of “I will, I want, and I am” which are the areas of human vulnerability that Satan tempts to cause sin. Please note that these three areas are based in the big “I” with its roots in self or selfishness.
1 John 2:15-17 – Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
The opposite of selfishness is love which is caring and sharing for the benefit of others. Therefore, spiritual darkness is selfishness, whereas spiritual light is LOVE.
Romans 13:8-10 – Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
So the great awakening is the realization of God’s love for mankind as the true Christians begin to manifest that love for others in the midst of the chaos and confusion which brings the light to shine and a revelation of God’s mercy and grace to the surface. Truth, justice and righteousness will prevail as this gospel goes out into all the world – and then the end shall come!
Matthew 24:12-14 – And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.
The best is yet to come for the saints, even while the wicked try to resist, but their efforts will bring upon themselves the wrath of God as predicted in the Bible less they repent. Therefore, repentance must be preached because it is the love of God that we are to express to the lost. Please recognize that forgiveness is an act of love that God requires of us.
The coming great awakening needs ready laborers for the harvest. This labor may require us to sweat and put forth great effort, but He is our strength and He gives us His Holy Spirit to equip us to do this work. We must also recognize that being a witness for Christ may, in some cases, result in opposition and persecution – this is the work of darkness resisting the light.
Acts 1:8 – But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judæa, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
We also need to recognize that the church as it operates today is not ready to receive all the new souls that are about to come into the kingdom of God. So changes must first take place in the churches. This may be the result of the current increase in the godless lockdowns of churches with this alleged virus situation.
1 Peter 4:17 – For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?
So we need to prepare, rise and shine, for the harvest is ripe and our work is before us. Let us openly declare the love of God that He has given to us and show the world, not just tell them, but show them.
Matthew 9:37 – Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.
We are about to enter the time of the great awakening: are you awake and ready? If not it’s time for you to awake out of sleep; to rise and shine and be filled with the knowledge of Christ and the Holy Spirit!
