POWER – A Study of Divine Ability
Three words translated power as used in the New Testament as defined from Strong’s Hebrew/Greek Dictionary:
Exousia: authority; to manage or control; power over a person or thing; power to rule or govern; permission delegated or granted; to make choices or decisions.
Dunamis: Force; power or ability producing miracles; power as in a dynamo that is self producing; ability; inherent power; power residing in a person or thing by virtue of its nature; power of which a person or thing exerts or puts forth.
Kratos: Vigor, (seldom used but pertains to) the dominion, strength and power of God, (as in Revelation 5:13 when all creation extols the Greatness of God).
What is the purpose of this divine power? To reveal God’s truth and bring us into the knowledge of Him, His light and His kingdom!
2 Timothy 3:5 –having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
This power is what God has provided to us to change our lives from darkness to light; from what is false to what is true; from spiritual death to eternal life.
1 Peter 2:9 – But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
What is the source of this divine and Biblical power?
The Word of God and that spoken by God or Jesus –
Matthew 9:6-7 – But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house. And he arose, and departed to his house. (Note: Jesus had not yet died on the cross for the remission of sins.)
Hebrews 1:3 – (Jesus) who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high:
Hebrew 4:12 – For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
The blood of Jesus –
1 John 1:7 – but if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
This is the power of redemption and the beginning source of spiritual life!
The name of Jesus –
Mark 16:17-18 – And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
Acts 3:6-8 – Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk. And he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up: and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength. And he leaping up stood, and walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God.
Acts 4:10 – be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.
Philippians 2:9-11 – Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is (in exalted power) above every name: that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
The Holy Spirit – power received by Holy Ghost Baptism or delegated by Christ
Luke 9:1-2 – Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases. And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick. (Note: delegated by Jesus)
Luke 10:1 & 17, 19 – After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come. …..And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name. …..Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. (Note: delegated by Jesus).
Acts 1:8 – But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judæa, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
This divine power manifests as the Gifts of the Holy Spirit:
1 Corinthians 12:8-12 - For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; to another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:
Romans 15:13 – Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.
The faith and belief of those who follow Christ –
John 1:12 - But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
John 14:12 – Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.
Matthew 17:20 – And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.
Acts 6:8 – And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people.
Ephesians 1:19-23 – and what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the havenly places, far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: and hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him that filleth all in all.

(This power and authority was then delegated to his followers), Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
